There is a great Charlie Rich story about how the singer was so shy and leery of the spotlight, his idea of doing a show was to hire the best musicians in Memphis to come to his house on a Sunday afternoon and perform with him in his living room. Some of that early investment in Wendy's burgers didn't hurt in helping to pay the freight. Of course, Calvin Newborn usually got the call to fill the guitar chair. He is one of the music's secret weapons, a player with savvy and soul whose name is passed around the in crowd like a precious gift. Glowing with a well-earned sobriety, the guitarist, brother of the late legendary pianist Phineas Newborn Jr., leads his backing group with such style and finesse it might be easy to miss the musical depth. But it's there, in warm tones of sonic clarity, and the photo on the back cover of of Newborn's big hollow body plugged into a Fender amp says it all: this disc is a guitar-player's dream, one that has been a long time coming and won't soon be forgotten.
