Newborn packs a lifetime of accrued wisdom into his guitar lines on this recent session in Memphis, the place where he and B.B. King kicked off their careers more than a half century ago. Today, the guitarist has an absolutely beautiful sense of pacing and understatement, turning eight-minute offerings "After Hours Blues" and "Newborn Blues" into sterling examples of modern blues guitar. Elsewhere, Neworn capably slips into a jazz mode aside pianist Donald Brown, trumpeter Scott Thompson and others -- no doubt doing so put him in mind of the time he spent in New York working with Charles MIngus and Earl Hines.
