New Born, the new album from legendary jazz guitarist Calvin Newborn will hopefully live up to its name in the ears of younger listeners.

For those that are not familiar with this family, it is in the interest of phenominal musicianship that it should be checked out. The guitar legend was sitting in with George Benson at Minton's Playhouse in New York when bebop was taking shape.

It was also at this time that the guitar was becoming more of a solo instrument in ensemble settings and not just a part of the rhythm section.

Calvin Newborn's latest work reflects over 50 years of evolution and amalgamation that have taken place in jazz music.

It would be hard to describe Newborn's playing without mentioning Wes Montgomery or Miles Davis. He is able to blend the southern tradition of soulful blues lyricism with cool jazz influenced rhythms and melodies.

Almost all of the compositions on this album are original with a couple of standards thrown in for good measure. There is even a slow delta blues that is sure to appease the appetites of die-hard blues fans. Newborn is a fine musician and still producing outstanding music in Memphis, Tenn.
