Here's a surprise for those who thought Newborn had died or disappeared. The talented guitarist made a splash alongside his brilliant pianist brother Phineas Newborn, Jr., in the 1950s, but later dropped into drugs and out of sight. Back in his hometown of Memphis in the nineties, he rehabilitated himself, hooked up with former colleagues and started recording again. His latest CD captures his bluesy lyricism, clean attack and judicious note-bending. Some of the sidemen aren't quite at Newborn's level. One of them, the great pianist Donald Brown, unquestionably is. Their duet on "Lush Life" is haunting.
