It has been more than six decades since a young B.B. King helped a younger Calvin Newborn pick out his first guitar, and the influence still shows. Tasty licks in the traditions of T-Bone Walker and Charlie Christian make this a delightful contrast to the flashier guitar heroes of today. Much of this album is best classified as Jazz, but in a couple of places, Mr. Newborns Blues roots show. The best is a song written by his talented but mentally ill older brother Phineas, Newborn Blues (3). Almost as good is the reworked Blues After Hours, presented as After Hours Blues (7). These cuts are long, unhurried, and satifying.
