You want to make an acoustic blues album that sounds as though it was recorded circa 1926? Well this is about "I Watched The Devil Die" in a nut zipper nutshell. Recorded at Jimbo Mathus' Delta recording Studio in Clarksdale with all Jimbo's vintage equipment, where Jimbo himself plays various instruments along with Olga Wilhelmine & Big Jack Johnson guesting. "Black Night" is the track that a few are hailing as the disc's highlight, has a Mississippi juke joint blues feel reminiscent of the late Junior Kimbrough. Not all is full on blues as there is a rendition of the traditional, "Bill Bailey", and Chris uses honky-tonk country and old timey balladry amongst his own compositions that out number the classic covers. Chris Cotton has wood-shedded and then some, with Jimbo Mathus having created a retro studio style that I'm sure will be in demand. I haven't any problem with folks pushing the boundaries of Blues music in order to give it a viable future, but folks who try to bury old blues as a museum piece will find that the true vine is pretty damned resilient; classic music never dies. This is blues music without the big label bullshit, well done Yellow Dog Records. Listen up & listen out for it.
