JRBS members who attended the Sedalia blues festival enjoyed formidable solo performances by Australian Fiona Boyes on stage and in a workshop. A deft fingerpicker, Boyes won over audiences with an infectious smile and gutsy vocals. Her latest release, "Lucky 13," also finds her at ease in a band setting.

Joining Boyes on the outing, among others, are notables Marcia Ball and Bob Margolin. Boyes mainly works with traditional forms but is credited with writing the lyrics on 10 of the 13 songs, gleefully providing a feminine slant on the blues in the manner of her idol, Memphis Minnie. She also provides some explosive electric guitar work - an enjoyable set by a talented musician.
