After fourteen years of recording and giving live performances in Australia, fronting her own blues band, The Mojos, Fiona Boyes began her journey recording acoustic albums. After five albums with The Mojos plus a few live recordings and several solo albums, in 2004 legendary Howlin' Wolf guitarist, Hubert Sumlin, joined Fiona and her new band, The Fortune Tellers at several gigs in Australia. She now is joined by a host of blues notables for her first American release, Lucky 13, on the Yellow Dog label. For the occasion of her United States debut, Boyes took advantage of the local talent with Bob Margolin, one of Muddy Waters' former guitarists, the Texan pianist, Marcia Ball, sax man Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff, and the one and only Texas Horns. One of the cuts on Lucky 13 features longtime Asleep At The Wheel pianist, Floyd Domino. Though 'Stranger In Your Eyes' is okay, it was 'Hold Me' that really caught my attention. This one is Old School; Old Beach, or whatever you want to call it. 'Celebrate The Curves' also caught my attention. It is very much like something those Uppity Blues Women would record. This Aussie needs to be checked out. She is good!
