Greg Johnson

With some people it almost seems that they were born to play music; that it is just natural for them because they make it appear so easy. But, believe me, they didn't just pick up their instrument and start to create incredible sounds overnight. It takes years of practice. They may have God's given gift, but they had to discover that talent within themselves over time. Providence must've kissed each individual finger on the hands of Mary Flower. The music she creates places the listener into her world of beauty and excitement that only the best of musicians have been blessed to perform.

The latest outing from the guitarist is a compilation of many of her finest instrumental tracks from her previous four recordings. It is a stunning collection featuring Ragtime numbers, Waltzes, finger picking and exceptional slide, both in a solo setting and with accompaniment. When she does perform with others here, the cast is also remarkable, including well renowned artists like Jon Cleary, Woody Mann, Tony Furtado and the late Fritz Richmond. Even more astounding is the fact that all save two of the 20 selections are self-penned. The two selections being "Arkansas Ramble" which she co-wrote with guitarist Pat Donohue from her "Ragtime Gal" CD and Memphis Minnie's "Black Rat Swing." That latter number, plus the tune "Hula Hoedown" appear on this disc for the first time anywhere.

If you're a fan of instrumental Blues and Roots music, or have enjoyed Mary Flower's playing and just haven't gotten around to picking up her earlier releases, this is a wonderful disc to add to your collection. One of the worlds foremost guitarists, Mary Flower's "Instrumental breakdown" is highly recommended.
