The oft used phrase, “Guitarist’s guitarist” is an accurate description of the Portland, Oregon’s Terry Robb, now recording in Memphis for Yellow Dog Records after a decade on the Burnside label. Long time John Fahey collaborator has come up with an acoustic album engineered at Sam Phillips’ studio by noted veteran rockabilly guitarist, Roland James. The album was cut in a single session that has blues as its core alongside rockabilly, ballads & Stax soul. The core band was, Stax drummer - Willie Hall, Charlie Wood on piano, Paul Taylor, bass & Terry Robb on guitar & vocals. Though Terry’s vocals are admirable he lacks the conviction on tracks like Percy Mayfield’s “My Mind Is Trying To Leave Me”, and Chuck’s “Back To Memphis” The Latin dance beat to Big Bill Broonzy’s classic “Louise” takes getting used to even though it is a luscious cut that has jazz leanings. Terry has come up with a nice balance of self penned tunes and interesting re-workings. Like Robben Ford’s “Talk to Your Daughter” and Mike Bloomfield’s “Play These Blues as You Please”, this is truly an accessible guitarist’s study album for non-musicians to enjoy. This is a contemporary, fresh sounding blues-based disc - a serious contender. Why not take it for a spin?
