Memphis-based Ellis has already released three acclaimed albums and this, his latest acoustic set, has some fine moments. The opening title, Snakes In My Garden, has some crisp and driving slide guitar played on a beautifully toned metal resonator instrument. His wife Julie shares the vocals on a faithful rendition of Mississippi John Hurt's Here I Am Send Me and on the Rev. Gary Davis-inspired original song Jesus Stole My Heart, Ellis captures much of Davis' spirit and energy. The album is produced by Jim Dickinson, known for his work with Bob Dylan, among others, and the slow and evocative title Perfect Ones Who Break has a strong Dylan feel. This 12-track release is well worth searching out.
